Motorcycle Ride along Oatka Creek and the Genesee River Valley on 8-5-06.

My rides are often inspired by a desire to visit some place I've never been before -  often times with some unique historic, cultural and/or geological feature. And this ride was no exception. This day's mission was to follow the historic Oatka trail and then to follow the Oatka Creek, hopefully to it's source - then, to follow the Genesee River/Valley back towards Rochester.

It helps that the whole area was incredibly beautiful and rural and dotted with quaint little towns along the way. As is often the case, I didn't stop nearly enough to take pictures - I was enjoying the ride way to much and didn't want to get off the bike.

This is a sweet ride and highly recommended for any riders in the Rochester, NY area. I took another ride along the Genesee Valley last year ending in Ellicottville. View that ride.

This picture was taken along River Road just southwest of Avon near the Abbey of the Genesee.

After following the Oatka Trail, I came across an abandoned railroad bed roughly between Leroy and Pavillion, which I rode for a short distance and eventually led to this old train trestle over Oatka Creek.

View of Oatka Creek from the trestle.

This was apparently an old bridge for cars that had long since been closed off. Again, this bridge crossed Oatka Creek. See the GPS maps for the exact location.

Another view of that same bridge.

And the view of Oatka Creek from that same bridge.

Since my GPS showed what was apparently a small hamlet called Oatka, of course I had to check it out. Turns out the only thing there was a small Baptist church.

Young Amish boys gathering up the hay. This was just off Route 19A near Houghton.

After reaching Rushford Lake near Cuba, which was the terminus for my ride on this day, I discovered Moss Lake. I was amazed - the water was literally boiling with fish!

This lake was a natural preserve which meant no hunting or fishing allowed. No natural predators = way too many fish apparently!

A wider view of Moss Lake.

The National Hotel in Leicester near Geneseo on the way back towards Avon.
